What is TTIP and why should we be scared?

TTIP (pronounced tee tip) – the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership – is a ‘free trade’ deal between the European Union and the USA. It will hand big business vast new powers over our society. It’s a dream for the corporations and a disaster for the rest of us – a direct attack on our democracy.

Why don’t we hear more about it?

While corporate lobbyists are playing an integral role in negotiations, the public have been shut out. All negotiators must sign nondisclosure agreements. There is no access to the draft text of the agreement – even for MPs – so most of what we know is from leaked documents.

Is it a threat to the NHS?

It would put the NHS into the hands of profiteers and we would have no say. It would give American Multinationals the power to sue the government if it ever attempted to take privatised health services back into public ownership.

Is TTIP a threat to anything else?

Yes, it is a threat to democracy, public services, food safety, the environment, climate, workers rights, personal privacy, financial control and it’s a dangerous blueprint for the rest of the world.

Where can I find out more about TTIP?
